Fired Twitter cleaning staff 'treated like garbage'

BBC interviewed four cleaners who said that they were fired from Twitter on Monday, they said that they were sacked without getting severance pay. One of them -  Adrianna Villarreal, who worked for Twitter for four years, told the BBC that now she’s afraid that she might not have enough money to feed her family during Christmas Time. Julio Alvarado had been a cleaner for 10 years at Twitter and his says that the atmosphere has always been nice and friendly. That was until Elon Musk took Twitter over in October. "Elon Musk has had a long history of flouting labour laws," said Mr Chiu. The president of the cleaners' union, told the BBC they organised a protest on Monday which led to cleaners being fired immediately.

In my opinion, sacking people off just before the Christmas Time is quite cruel. A lot of them may not be able to live through winter or even feed their children, but honestly I don’t think that neither Elon Musk nor his people care too much about it. They’re too rich to think about poor people’s issues. People working for Twitter also say that since Elon Musk became an owner of this company, they are treated horribly. I think that this problem should be addressed.

Two teenage activists, glued their hands to frames of two Francisco Goya paintings (“The Naked Maja” and “The Clothed Maja”), at the Prado museum, in Madrid. They wrote “+1,5°C” between the two artworks. The museum confirms that luckily none of the paintings were damaged, but the frames do have slight blemishes. Climate crisis is a really important concern in the modern world, but in my opinion, drawing attention to this problem by committing acts of vandalism is just dumb and completely inappropriate. Though the paintings aren’t destroyed, they possibly could’ve been and I think that exposing such important   and valuable art works to the potential damage is certainly not right. Also, I don’t understand why they would ever consider destroying art pieces completely unrelated to the global warming problem. Summing up, though the intentions of the activists are rather good, I think that the way in which they are drawing attention to the problem is completely wrong and inappropriate...

Social conformity

Brain Games is a National Geographic series showing different experiments and explaining how does human brain work. One of the experiments performed is a bit similar to Asch Conformity Experiment and it also shows the power of social conformity. In this experiment, there is shown a group of patients in a waiting room waiting for their eye doctor appointment – all of these people are actors. Every once in a while they hear a beep sound and immediately after that, they stand up. Next, there is shown a  woman who came for her eye doctor appointment and  isn’t aware about the experiment. She enters the waiting room and sees that every time other patients hear the beep they stand up. It took her only three beeps to join the rest and  stand up after hearing the sound. Are stereotypes dangerous?

 Personally, I think that stereotypes, especially wide-reaching are dangerous, because they can cause prejudices and lead to other harmful behaviors such as racism. Stereotypes aren’t always coming from bad intentions, sometimes they simply occur because the lack of knowledge. However, this doesn’t minimalize the harm they create. One of the examples is thinking that all of the African people live in villages and don’t have the access to e.g. running water or electricity. This stereotype is quite damaging to them, because the reality isn’t like that at all. This kind of thinking can cause prejudices and harmful behaviors e. g. patronizing them. Summing up, stereotypes are dangerous, because they create prejudices which often are the cause of very damaging behaviors such us looking down on some people or racism.
