The sleeper effect

Whether we like it or not, media influences our opinions and can change our preferences or beliefs. Not always directly, but overall, it does control our lifestyles. If you’re for example asked how many car commercials have influenced you to buy a new car  you’re probably going to say none and that’s most likely true, however each one of advertisements we come across slowly alters our perspective. We can’t see it happening, but it influences our mind. The sleeper effect requires two things to function. One of them is repetition – we see the same advertisements over and over and we naturally remember some of catch phrases used there.   Another essential thing is called a discounting cue. It is used to hold back the impact of an add. They use it to neutralize their commercial, so right after watching it we’re not that keen on buying their product. The effect they want to achieve is that when time goes by the initially unconvincing message or add becomes persuasive. Source: htt...

Manipulation tactics pt. 2

Another manipulation tactic worth mentioning is social comparison. People tend to measure their success, attractiveness, even happiness by comparing themselves to others. Manipulators know and use this phenomenon really well. It could be used to convince people to take a certain action e. g. the celebrity is on a diet, so you should be too. Next form of manipulation is called responsibility invocation. It relies on using obligations (like booking appointments e. g. at the hairdresser or whatsoever) to convince somebody to follow through the plans that they’ve made. That way saying “no” can be way harder. Pleasure induction is rather a harmless manipulation tactic, but still – it’s a form of manipulation. It can be used by people to convince others to take actions, e. g. by saying “come on, let’s do this, it will be fun!”. Last manipulation tactic which I’m going to talk about is monetary reward. Manipulators offer people money in exchange of committing acts they normally wouldn’t...

Manipulation tactics

It is important to get to know manipulation tactics, not necessarily to use them, but to protect yourself against them. One of them is called coercion. it is based on the fear of harm or threats. Manipulator makes the person being coerced feel as though the consequences of not doing the action are worse than of actually doing it.   Next tactic is self-abasement. Basically, it’s about the manipulators humiliating themselves (for example by saying how dumb and weak they are) so that the other person will forgive them, believe them or sometimes, it even can be used to strengthen a relationship. Another, maybe a bit surprising tactic is silent treatment. Silence can make people really anxious. If someone refuses to speak, it can easily make the other person feel the urge to give them something they want just to break the silence. source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no7hxwicxiA&t=105s

Media manipulation

All kinds of media use manipulation. As time passes and technology improves, it’s getting more and more serious. News are often decided not by their importance, but readers want to click on instead. Sometimes, the data shown in an article is simply untrue, just to make people reading it unaware of the problem or to change their prescription on a certain topic. Media is treated as very reliable source, but I don’t think we should trust it that much – e. g. Wikipedia and many other sites can be modified by practically everybody. Now, there are basically no barriers of its reliability, but the old perceptions remain. That’s what media does  – it exploits the difference between reality and perception. source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/mariansalzman/2019/10/13/dont-be-too-chicken-to-newsjack/?sh=4037736e2b5c

Manipulating in advertising

Its no surprise that we come across many different advertisements daily, but did you know that an average person is exposed to about 3,500 of them a day? That’s a lot and considering the fact that all ads use some kind of manipulation makes it kind of scary.  One of the most often used manipulation tactic in advertising is making people think that they are missing out on something, so that they feel the need to buy the certain product. It is important for the companies to get to know what do customers need and why and then they can convince them to buy their product. This is called brand perception and it is really powerful technique in marketing. In advertisements, marketers don’t focus particularly on what they’re selling but on the feeling that comes with it. That’s what really often is the final factor for potential buyers to decide on making the purchase. source: https://briefercopy.com/manipulation-in-advertising/
