a catastrophic flood in Marche, Italy

A catastrophic flooding happened in Italy’s central Marche region last Thursday (15.09). People have lost their everything; not only food or furniture but also souvenirs of their loved ones. Some people are still missing.

It was the worst storm to affect this region since 2014. Within nine hours, there fell one third of a yearly average of rain – 420 mm..

Marche residents are angry, mostly at politicians, because nobody warned them of intense storms. Italy is really vulnerable to climate change, e. g. breaking the European record last year – reaching 48,8C.

On Friday, Enrico Letta – the leader of the centre-left Democratic party, asked why fight against this crisis isn’t a first priority and the topic had been absent since the debate. Politicians don’t treat it as a relevant problem, but an obstacle for economy. They only mention this issue in the middle of an emergency. 120 000 people signed a petition for political leaders to make climate crisis a priority.

Italy had quite a few disasters similar to that one and nothing is done, now some people refuse to vote in upcoming election, on 25 September.
