What is social engineering?

These days, we as society are exposed to manipulation, which can come from many different areas of our lives. For example the internet is a great tool for hackers to possess sensitive information about people such as passwords to their bank accounts. We are constantly being influenced by politics which is practically everywhere – in the internet, TV, radio, newspapers. Social engineering is a term describing those actions. It has two main types, one of them concentrates on gaining the personal data of people, but rather by manipulating them then hacking. Another one is about making people believe in particular things or behave in a certain way.

  1. Having read your post I got quite confused about what these terms mean: manipulation, social engineering, influence. Steeling data or hacking is not social engineering. Even manipulating people on a large scale not always is. Please get your definitions straight and narrow the term if you want it to be useful.
